We have all heard about the baby blues, but the truth is probably most of us had them. The baby blues is a time of depression or anxiety after having a baby. It can last 1 to 4 weeks. The theory is that it is caused a disorder of hormones in the woman body after a baby is born. Anything beyond that time period is considered postpartum depression and should be dealt with by a doctor. While the level of intensity of the blues varies from woman to woman, 80% of women are reported to have it.
For me, I had it, and bad. It was so bad I can hardly function. I felt as though I was in Hell. When I’m in it I know what it is, but that doesn’t make it go away. I’m very open about my struggles and have had many women come to me, while dealing with it, for advice. Hope is the number one combatant, so here is hope.
- Recognize what it is and accept it. Many women feel ashamed. Don’t! Admit you are sad, anxious, or frustrated and start from there. Knowing that you are not messed up and this will not last forever is important. Hope.
- Tell people. Tell your husband. Let others know to be positive around you. Ask for help if you are struggling with the baby.
- Sleep. Get grandma or daddy to keep an eye on Junior and take a nap. Sleep gives you strength and helps your body get a hold on the hormones that are causing this.
- Stay happy. Watch movies or TV that make you laugh. Keep up positive conversations. Do things you love like paint you nails, or do you hair. Tell yourselves this is temporary and give yourself hope. It’s hard, this is supposed to be the happiest days of your life, and it’s easy to feel shame for not being happy. Just focus on what joys you do have in your life.
- Don’t be alone. Go to family’s houses or invite friends over. This is hard if you are nursing and not comfortable doing it in front of people, but pull another woman or you husband aside with you when you nurse. Or be like me and grab a sheet and nurse wherever. Just don’t be alone.
- Keep lights on. For me darkness was despair, so I kept the house bright and slept with a nightlight. When the sun is shinning, go outside and soak it in.
- Of major importance, there are many natural supplements that help correct hormones or combat depression. My personal favorite St. Johns Wort and Evening Primrose. They really do work and are a natural solution.
- Let your self heal. Many women feel there is merit in exercising right away after baby, or are so desperate to be back to normal they over-extend themselves. Do not push your self, this can put too much strain on your body and prolong the blues. Accept that you are healing and rest.
- Seek spiritual help. No matter what religion you are, seek for God’s assistance in your life. Remember he loves you and this to shall pass. I ask for a blessing from my priesthood leaders of my faith. Pray and believe.
- Last but most important. Seek professional help if you are a threat to yourself or baby. There is no shame in asking for help when there is a problem beyond your ability to coupe with. There is hope.
